This adventurous Canadian is always in the woods, patiently waiting for the moments and creatures hidden from the public. With a keen eye for detail and a contagious enthusiasm for wildlife Brandon Broderick is full of insights with stories to back them up. So.... without further ado here is the next installment of Cotton's "Interview with a photographer" featuring Brandon Broderick.
Cotton Carrier: Where do you call home?
Brandon Broderick: I’m originally from the Windsor, Ontario area but have called Terrace, BC home for the last 6 years.
CC: How long have you taken photographs for unprofessionally and professionally?
BB: I’ve been taking photos for about 10 years now, the last 6 of which have been professionally.
CC: How would you define your style as a photographer?
BB: I spend a lot of time photographing wildlife, landscapes, and nightscapes, so I guess nature photography is a good definition for the type of shooting I do.
CC: Have you ever gone to photography school?
BB: I’ve never gone to photography school and have learned most of what I know by taking bad photos and learning from those mistakes.
CC: Where is your favorite place or thing to shoot?
BB: My favourite place to photograph is the area I live in. Northwest BC is an incredibly beautiful place with abundant wildlife and landscape photo opportunities.
CC: What Camera(s) / Lenses do you use?
BB: I mainly shoot with a Canon 5D mk II and Canon 24-70mm and 500mm lenses. I do have a few others but those are my favourites.
CC: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to get “The Shot”?
BB: I try to be as safe and not crazy as possible when I’m out shooting, but I’ve had a lot of people call me crazy when they see some of my bear photos. A long lens and lots of experience working around bears and other wild animals allows me to photograph them safely.
CC: Who has inspired you as a photographer?
BB: Two friends of mine, Connor Stefanison and Jess Findlay, are by far some of the most talented and inspiring photographers out there. Seeing some of the images they create always inspires me to try and be the best I can when I’m out taking photos. Some other photographers that inspire me are Art Wolfe, Ansel Adams, Paul Nicklen, and Marc Adamus.
CC: What advice would you tell an aspiring photographer?
BB: I would tell an aspiring photographer to get out and use their camera as much as possible and learn all of it’s functions. Some situations are very short lived and the last thing you want to be doing is looking for a button on your camera.
CC: How has photography shaped your day to day?
BB: Being a nature photographer has really helped my patience on a daily level. A lot of photography involves waiting for the right moment, and learning how to deal with that has definitely been beneficial to my day to day life.
CC: Where has photography taken you, and made you experience?
BB: Photography has taken me to some pretty amazing places, especially Terrace where I live. While living in Windsor I had 2 job offers to choose from - one in Labrador City, NL and one here in Terrace, BC. I chose Terrace based on it’s diverse nature photography opportunities.
