Cotton Carrier: Where do you call home?
Jason Loftus: West Haven, UT – Born and raised
CC: How long have you taken photographs for unprofessionally and professionally?
JL: I have been taking images now for about 10 years total, 3-4 years with a serious frame of mind working to make a business out of my photography passion.
CC: How would you define your style as a photographer?
JL: My main passion is Wildlife, all kinds, but I play around with Landscapes and some general portraits from time to time. I like to represent what was naturally seen in the field as much as possible.
CC: Have you ever gone to photography school?
JL: No, other than a 1 hour class I took at a local camera shop focused on shooting in manual mode.
CC: Where is your favorite place or thing to shoot?
JL: My favorite things to shoot are Elk, Mule Deer, Sheep and Waterfowl and wherever I can find them.
CC: What Camera(s) / Lenses do you use?
JL: I shoot Nikon gear: D810 and D850 bodies with the following lenses: Nikon 500mm f4, Nikon 200-500mm, Nikon 24-120mm, Nikon 24-70mm, Nikon Macro 105mm
CC: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to get “The Shot”?
JL: I’ve spent some time pretty close to Wildlife with a shot in mind, sometimes closer than I would like. It’s always a fine balance with Wildlife as you want to be close for detail and such but you have to think about how your actions impact the Wildlife and their behaviors. The goal is to get the shot but not alter their behavior. Tough balance sometimes!
CC: Who has inspired you as a photographer?
JL: Harlan B Cooper has been a huge inspiration and Mentor for me, but I get inspiration from just about everyone and their work in some way, shape or form.
CC: What advice would you tell an aspiring photographer?
JL: Get out and shoot! The best way to learn is to try things and then see the results in post. Get out and shoot folks
CC: Can you share a photographic resource you personally use?
JL: I use lots of YouTube Videos but my favorite resource as of late is the “Wild and Exposed” Podcast and YouTube Channel. Go check it out
CC: How has photography shaped your day to day?
JL: Haha, I think about this one a lot, it’s now very difficult for me to look at things without a frame around it. Everything is a picture in my mind.
CC: Where has photography taken you and made you experience?
JL: Well one thing for sure it has done is made me visit some amazing places around the Western United States, and it has already got me thinking about where else in the world I want to go and experience Wildlife and Photography moving
forward, such as Polar Bears in the Arctic, Grizzly and Brown Bears in Alaska, etc…
CC: Any exciting photographic events in coming up you’d like to share?
JL: I’m currently planning a trip to Lake Clarke for Bears next year and I’m very much looking forward to it.
